What Is It Like Getting Settled into a West Palm Beach Rehab?

West Palm Beach in Florida attracts countless tourists eager to enjoy its beaches, balmy sea air, cultural attractions and lovely ocean views. The area is also home to a considerable number of drug rehab recovery facilities. There is a reason for this. West Palm Beach’s sunshine and mild climate create an uplifting atmosphere for someone struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Sunshine actually influences the brain and can fight depression. Blue is a calming color, and looking at the ocean actually changes the brainwaves, lulling the observer into a type of meditative state. Ocean air contains special molecules called negative ions. These ions can induce feelings of soothing serenity. In other words, the beach can be good for the soul and mind. You may have many questions about attending a drug recovery facility in Florida. So what is it like getting settled into a West Palm Beach Rehab?

What is the First Day Like?

When you first arrive, you will be greeted by a professional intake staff member. There will be paperwork to complete. You will be asked why you’re attending the facility and what your expectations and goals are. You will have to supply your medical history information. If you have any prescription medication, you will need to surrender it to a staff member. Only medications for chronic conditions will be allowed. This may include prescription medications for such things as high blood pressure, certain heart conditions, diabetes, thyroid, acid reflux and similar conditions which must be medicated on a daily basis. All prescription medication must be in their original pharmacy containers and clearly labeled with your name, the directions, the name of the doctor and pharmacy and other information legally required to be on the bottle. Staff will make sure you receive your meds as directed.

Once you have completed the forms and intake process, you will probably speak to a counselor who will describe some of the therapy you will receive. You will learn more about this as your stay progresses. You will be asked about recent drug use and you will probably be asked to provide a urine sample for drug analysis. If you haven’t completed detox elsewhere, and you have used drugs more recently than about 10 to 14 days ago, you will need detox before you can enter the rehab. This is why it’s very important to be honest about your drug use before you arrive. If the facility has an attached detox unit, then recent drug use is no problem. If it doesn’t, and it doesn’t have an affiliated detox unit nearby, you will likely be refused to begin rehab treatment. So, expect a drug test when you arrive and be prepared to enter recovery treatment only if you are completely drug-free.

You will then receive a brief tour of the facility so you know where everything is. Staff will answer any questions.

Forbidden Items

Whether it’s in their detox unit or the main rehab facility, you will then be shown to your room. Staff will inspect your bags and luggage for any forbidden items. These items will vary from rehab to rehab, but the following items are universally not permitted:

  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Mouthwash and hairspray with alcohol
  • Pornography
  • Weapons
  • Suggestive clothing
  • Clothing with offensive slogans, such as racist or sex-related slurs or language
  • Any kind of apparel promoting drug use or alcohol
  • Electronics
  • Non-prescription medications

Do not try to sneak these items into the rehab. Expect a thorough inspection of anything you bring with you.

Electronic items, such as cell phones and laptops, may be permitted at certain facilities, but usage of these is almost always restricted to certain times during your free time. However, rehabs keep a tight ship and are highly structured. Your free time will be quite limited. This is because the rehab wants you to focus on your recovery, not your cell phone’s text messages. Ask ahead if electronics are permitted. If they’re not, leave them at home.

After your arrival and after all the paperwork is done and all your questions are answered, you will be left alone in your room to adjust to your new environment.
