Partial Hospitalization Program

There are three general levels of outpatient care.

• Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
• Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
• Outpatient Program (OP)

Partial hospitalization is the highest level of outpatient care. By level, we are referring to the amount of time the client is required to spend within the walls of the treatment center. Being an outpatient option, the client will not need to reside within the facility for overnight stays. With that being said, PHP does require a significant time investment on the part of the client.

In general terms, a PHP outpatient client can expect to spent 6 to 8 hours a day, 5 to 7 days a week participating in treatment. The duration of their PHP treatment program will depend on the progress they make during therapy. It’s reasonable for clients to anticipate setting aside 60 to 90 days to complete PHP treatment. Should a client make really good progress, they could graduate to an IOP program where requirements would be lessened. On the other hand, clients who fail to show good progress may need to consider submitting to a more restrictive residential treatment Program.

As part of a PHP program, clients will spend a great deal of time in individual therapy. It’s also likely they will get the opportunity to participate in organized group therapy sessions.

The goal of therapy is to help clients learn the truth about their addiction. If a client can get a grasp on the reasons they feel the need to self-medicate away their problems, they would likely find themselves in position to develop the coping and life skills they will need to avoid relapses in the future.
